Celebrating World Bee Day with a Purpose
It’s really amazing that the evolution of pollinators like hummingbirds, butterflies and bees happened at the time that angiosperms evolved (that is plants that produced flowers and bear seeds in fruit) – and let’s put that in perspective, it was 125 million years ago! So, with the first flowers, we saw the contribution of our bees.
Even more amazing is that the earth then was much warmer, and covered in rainforests, which created this expansion or diversification of the ‘angiosperm group’, evolving flora and pollinators in tandem. They simply evolved together creating more. Expanding our ecosystems. And our bees, our honey bees, were right there when most of the first flowers gave off their scent.
This is the purpose behind the legacy we are tasked with being guardians of. It is our duty to nurture this legacy into our future by ensuring we operate consciously today.
MORE ABOUT GOOD BEE FOODActive Ingredients in Pesticides Bad 4 Bees
We’ve created an easy reference section on the active ingredients in pesticides that are bad for bees and in some cases humans too. This allows you to check out the ingredients as you shop. This pesticide guide was compiled for The Bee Effect by Dr Julie Abisgold out of the PAN International List of Highly Hazardous Pesticides.
CHECK IT OUTLove Your Weeds
Being a Bee Guardian means feeding bees right. And some weeds bees love. They also help as a natural mineral fixer in the soil, moisture retention, creating a living mulch, they repel insects and or attract the insects and the bugs that your crops can take advantage of. Check out our listing by country of origin, with all these weeds being found in South Africa.
BEES WEEDSThe Bigger Picture
Through our reforestation and integrated biodiversity projects we are supporting healthy biodiversity corridors and playing a role in mitigating climate change impacts, programs that are part of our commitment to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration as an official supporter.
The History of World Bee Day
A legacy honoured. The 20th of May is a day of keen significance, and a day on which we are all tasked with celebrating our bees and raising awareness for the critical role they play in the world. In our lives. For one day around the world, everyone is united in bee-buzziness. A day committed to mobilising international co-operation to take the challenges surrounding our bees head on.
